CDCPS-R. Kingman Webster received the 2019 National Blue Ribbon School Award, one of 6 school in MA and only the second MA charter school to ever win the award.
Last week, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized Community Day Charter Public School (CDCPS)-R. Kingman Webster as one of the country's Exemplary High Performing Schools National Blue Ribbon School for 2019. The recognition is based on the school's overall academic performance.
"We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives" said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. "As a National Blue Ribbon School, your school demonstrates what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative cultures of teaching and learning."
The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.
"This Blue Ribbon Award is a testament to the hard work of our staff, students, and parents," said CDCPS Chief Academic Officer Mary Chance. "Without each and every one of them, CDCPS would not be able to provide the high-quality education that it does to our students in Lawrence."
CDCPS-R. Kingman Webster, founded in 2012, draws on the 24 year history of CDCPS-Prospect, one of the first charters approved by the state, which has been recognized over several years for its design and for the academic results of its students.
"From the very beginning, CDCPS schools were designed to offer a rigorous curriculum and to engage parents as partners in their child's education," said Sheila Balboni, former Executive Director of The Community Group, who helped establish the CDCPS network. "Becoming a National Blue Ribbon School confirms what we already knew – that if teachers, parents, and community members work together, our schools can achieve extraordinary results."
Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. This year, 362 schools in the nation and six schools from Massachusetts will be recognized. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. CDCPS-R. Kingman Webster is just the second Massachusetts charter school to ever win the award.
